Middle School Social/Emotional Development

DSC_0642Middle School students at Sage are well-supported, both academically and personally. Teachers know their students well and share the same curiosity and interest in the world. A synergy develops in this collective learning experience that creates a sense of excitement from the most basic to more challenging material. Students dance and sing about the coordinating conjunctions and primary sources in history, fall in love with the beauty of the golden ratio, and wonder about the power of potato cannons, self-made catapults, and mousetrap cars. Faculty are comfortable with the intensity of their students, for they are quite similar to them. We learn something new from our students every day.

Our small community and the close relationships among students, faculty, and parents also provide a uniquely wholesome experience. Students in the Middle School do not have to grow up too quickly with respect to inappropriate social situations. Interestingly, and perhaps due to their intelligence as a group, Sage Middle Schoolers seem focused on scholarship rather than the many cultural and social distractions of their peers at other schools. They are socially forgiving and respectful of each other.

Most importantly, the Middle School program fosters the development of our students beyond just intellect. We have learned that our students learn best and are most happy when we challenge them to be multidimensional people, to be engaged with others, to collaborate, and to stretch their abilities in all aspects of potential. They know that we have confidence in them, and as a result, they engage with each other and ultimately, the world.
