Our History

Responding to a lack of adequate programs for academically talented students ages four to fourteen, the Sage Center for Learning was founded in 1990 by Linda and Earl Beers with the express purpose of serving the needs of academically gifted children from the greater Providence and Boston areas. The name Sage is not an acronym, but rather reflects the desire that the school would guide bright children toward wisdom. The school opened in the fall of 1990 with eleven students of varying ages and one teacher. Linda Beers served as the first Head of School, and Mr. and Mrs. Beers were the sole trustees and fiduciaries of the school.

In 1996 the corporate structure of the school was reorganized, increasing the size of the Board of Trustees and providing membership in the corporation to the parent body. The Director of Admissions and Curriculum, Jeanne M. Cummings was appointed Interim Head of School for the 1997-1998 school year, after Mr. and Mrs. Beers departed over philosophical differences. Katherine G. Windsor served as Head from 1998 to 2008. Timothy S. Monroe, began his tenure in July 2008 and ended in June 2012. In August 2012, Nan Wodarz was selected as the Interim Head of School, and after a national search, was ultimately chosen as the new Head of The Sage School.

Initially, the school rented space in its current location from the Town of Foxboro, sharing space with public school programs. Sage moved to temporary quarters at another public school building in 1995 and returned to the Mechanic Street campus in 1996. We have expanded over the years to use the entire building, eventually purchasing the campus from the Town of Foxboro in 2005. After the purchase, the school invested in updates to the building such as new parking and traffic configurations, a new roof, and various cosmetic improvements.

After a second major capital campaign, the school completed construction of a physical education and arts facility during the fall of 2008. This full-size gymnasium, fine and performing arts rooms, along with flexible meeting space was named the Windsor Wing after former Head of School Katherine Windsor.
