Sixth Grade Trip to Thompson Island
I had such a great time with the sixth grade on Thompson Island. We learned about the principles of the Outward Bound philosophy: physical fitness, craftsmanship, service to others, self reliance, and compassion above all else. The students also learned about challenge by choice where they were urged to leave their comfort zone and head into their learning zone, while not over reaching and hitting their panic zone. I was thrilled to see students set goals for themselves and reach, as well as often surpass, them. The high ropes course was a highlight for most of the students, and the huge smiles and self confidence exuded was a testament to their drive and to Outward Bound’s skilled counselors.
Teamwork was also a major theme of the trip, and the students learned about leadership styles and methods to work in a group; skills they will need throughout their academic careers and beyond. We spent one morning poking around for critters in a salt marsh. I loved the opportunity to inject some ecology into the trip, and the kids loved seeing all the life in the marsh, but best of all was the mud facials/face-painting. (Thank you Dr. Bourn!) Ms. Cadigan and I had the opportunity to climb and work together on the ropes course, which was so fun. We returned back to Boston on a sunny boat ride filled with very happy kids and teachers.
