Junior Division Engineering Fair

On Thursday, February 20, The Sage School held its Engineering Fair for students in grades 3 through 5 showcasing the students’ practical engineering solutions to facility challenges at the school’s campus. Some sample exhibits include:

  • Wasp-control Measures
  • Teachers’ Room Re-Design
  • Sound Proofing A Media Room
  • Designing An Indestructible Soccer Net
  • Traffic Flow Improvements in Carpool Line
  • An Outdoor Education Center
  • An Improved Homework Planner

Students worked in teams and all projects were completed entirely at school by the students. Exhibits required documented planning and work materials as well as a scale model representation of the final design.

State Senator James Timilty and State Representative Jay Barrows attended the fair and presented our Junior Division (Grade 3-5) Math and Science Teachers with a citation recognizing the teachers for their outstanding leadership with students in the study of engineering, mathematics, and science.

“We were incredibly honored to be recognized by Sen. Timilty and Rep. Barrows!” said Dr. Nan Wodarz, Head of School. “It is great to see local leaders recognizing the importance of science, technology, engineering and math in elementary education. Our teachers are doing amazing work preparing our students for the workforce in the next ten to twenty years.”

“The Engineering Fair is unique in many ways,” adds Sage Math and Science Teacher Jennifer Randall. “The students work in groups to design a solution to a problem which affects The Sage School. Using an engineering design process the students have worked for weeks to research topics and materials, interview experts around the school, plan, and ultimately design a solution to the problem. Our curriculum allows the project work to take place exclusively during our science time. Best of all, our students are using skills learned across multiple disciplines and applying them in a practical way. In addition, they learn to work in teams and how to share ideas and express opinions.”
