Sage Arts Magazine, Volume 2
Created in Latin, humanities, Spanish, and art classes, this collection is a celebration of the imagination of Sage students that pulses through their writing and photography. During this school year, we engaged in a deep exploration of the late 20th century history, literature, and art; this is reflected in our student’s poetry, prose, and photographs seen in this collection. During the 20th century, as old rules that governed society were abandoned, so too were rules guiding literature. Poets such as e.e. cummings inspired our students to write their own rule-breaking poetry. As photography rose as an art form during the late 20th century, new perspectives and novel ways to use light and shadow were explored, and this too inspired our students’ study of photography. Great speakers of the 1960s – John F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King, Jr. in particular – drew from ancient rhetorical traditions even as they broke American traditional barriers, and this inspired our students in Latin and humanities.
We are proud that Sage is a safe place to express creativity for our students, a vibrant creative home. In describing this sense of creative safety, one student gave thanks “To the Earth and the air, for letting me live/ To the birds and the dawn for teaching song/For the Sage School for being my home.”
We hope you enjoy this year’s collection of writing and art.
