Sage Celebrates 20 Years

On Saturday, May 21 nearly 200 people gathered at The Sage School to celebrate the school’s 20th Anniversary. The event drew a variety of community members including parents, alumni, trustees, faculty, and state representatives.

The evening consisted of remarks from Head of School Timothy S. Monroe, Board Chair Solomon Menashi, and Middle School Division Leader Sandra Cordes-Vaughan. Their speeches reflected on the school’s history, looked forward to the school’s future, and acknowledged the “20 for 20” community service initiative launched in the beginning of the school year to mark this important milestone. State Representatives F. Jay Barrows, 1st Bristol District and Betty Poirier, 14th Bristol District attended the event to recognize the school’s community service efforts and presented the 20 for 20 Student Committee Co-Chairs, Benjamin P. ‘11 and Anastasia S. ‘12 with a proclamation of their service.

The celebration ended with a musical performance by the parent-student-alumni ensemble of Arthur D., III. P’08, ‘09, ‘11, Charlotte D. ‘09, Arthur D. IV ‘11, and Ian M. ‘11.

“For me, it was wonderfully affirming to see so many people from our community showing so much support and passion for our school,” said Monroe.

The school was founded by Norfolk residents Linda and Earl Beers because there were no local options for young, academically gifted children. The Sage School first opened its doors in the fall of 1990 in a single classroom of the Lewis School building on Mechanic Street with just one teacher and 11 students. Eventually, the Lewis School became Sage’s permanent home when the school purchased the building from the Town of Foxboro in 2005. Today, the school has grown to more than 150 students and nearly 40 faculty and administrators.

As Sandra Cordes-Vaughan so eloquently stated in her faculty perspective on the school’s history, “Our numbers continued to grow; teachers and administrators came and left, but always, always, our real mission remained true, the quest to help bright kids become wise people.”
